The Oxford Police Department's on-going investigation has nabbed several Internet child predators since its formation last summer. Under the direction of Officer Paul Garner, Operation Minor Mistake was formed in June 2006 to help prevent online sexual predators from infiltrating computers of local residents. According to the National Center For Missing and Exploited Children, a survey conducted of 10- to 17-year-olds revealed that 34 percent had posted their real names, telephone numbers, home addresses or the names of their schools online where anyone could see. Forty-five percent of respondents shared that they posted their birth dates or age and 18 percent admitted to posting pictures of themselves. [...] According to the research, one in five children have been sexually solicited. One in four have encountered unwanted pornography. Close to 60 percent of teens have received an e-mail or instant message from a stranger and half have communicated back.
